Some say her command of the English language is matched only by the likes of Chaucer, Shakespere and Tolkien. Others say her compassion and kindness masks a secret life terrorizing children, as either a teacher or a demonic clown. And yet others say she is leading the push to have Gallifreyan culture recognized as a subject in the national curriculum.
All we know is her name is fishbiscuit.
Who are you and where are you from?
Hello, there! I’m fishbiscuit and I live somewhere along the east coast of the United States. I am a middle school English teacher and I like t-shirts.
What are you currently working on?
I am currently working on several different designs. I have a couple of projects in the works with different artist groups and for myself. I hope to have the summer to get them finished!
What inspired you to become a designer?
It’s something I just kind of fell into. I never intended to become a designer. It just sort of happened. One day I was buying cool t-shirts on the Internet. The next thing I knew, I was somehow designing them, and getting printed, and people were buying my shirts! Yay!
How would you achieve world peace?
With lots of compassion and elbow grease. World peace can’t happen from the couch.
Do your students know of your double life as a designer? If so, are you the cool teacher?
Haha! My students are so cute. Whenever I wear a t-shirt to school, they always ask me if I designed it. I think they get a real kick out of seeing my artwork in print. They always ask such wonderful questions and really try to understand the design process and how my drawings end up on a t-shirt. I guess I AM the cool teacher!
Books, movies or games? What are your favorites?
Books: Where the Wild Things Are, Harry Potter, The Dark Tower series and most Stephen King books but not the really, really scary ones, The Hunger Games, True Blood, Black Dagger Brotherhood, The Vampire Chronicles – You’re disappointed, aren’t you. You wanted me to name War and Peace and other classics, not vampire nonsense. I have read so much literature and so many textbooks in my graduate and undergraduate career, all I want to do now is read for my silly amusement!
Movies: Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, The Princess Bride, Love Actually, The Hangover, Anchorman – Again, you won’t find any academy award winners on my list.
Games: Anything Mario or Zelda related, but my absolute favorite game of all time is Full Throttle. Not without my box of bunnies!
Who would you most like to see in one of your designs?
I would probably like to see Stephen King sporting one of my Dark Tower designs. That would be so cool! He could wear it during a cameo in the Dark Tower movie when they finally decide to make it.
You’ve got 24 hours before the world is annihilated. What do you do?
Hug my son and my husband until the end comes.
Favorite Doctor?
Oh my, 10th, hands down!
Who are some of your favorite designers? Who should we feature next?
There are so many designers I admire and just drool over their work. My absolute favorite is BootsBoots who also happens to be a good friend of mine and an all around amazing person. Her art is so original, funny and creative. I just love her style and her ideas. You should definitely talk to her next. She’s pretty funny too!
Tell us something about yourself that we don’t know
I have a cheeseburger obsession. I like to spend each weekend driving to a new burger joint in search of the world’s best burger, so if you have any suggestions, send them my way!
Which design has been your most popular? Which are you most proud of?
Probably “Han Quixote” because drawing like Picasso is HARD!
What advice would you offer to aspiring designers?
Never give up, don’t compare yourself to anyone else and don’t be afraid to take constructive criticism or advice from other artists.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I have a package of m&ms. Want some?
Any shout-outs?
A big old shout out to all of my amazingly wonderful artist friends in the Art Illuminati, RBA and RBC. You guys rock! Thank you, Tshirt Roundup, for featuring my art and taking the time to talk with me. ![]()
